Northwestern University Campus Maps: Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center

The most dramatic change to the Assembly building since the addition of the pressed steel building in 1930 came in 1950 in the form of a northern rectangular wing for test and repair. Called the Dynamometer building, it contained modem automobile road testing equipment. Although it did not disturb the facade of the two-story office building, It did cover over most of the bays at the north end of the Assembly building. Its flat roof and lack of style made it a sharp departure from the Albert Kahn design. Executive parking took up space in the west end, and it added 38,930 square feet to the plant.

The cast-in-place concrete frame structure is exposed; wood panels and wood windows add richness and warmth to the interior. The north end of the atrium is connected by a bridge to the existing academic facility’s second level. Next to the building’s entrance, landscaped terraces step from grade down to basement level, allowing natural light and views into a two-story shop area.

Because Design Thinking and Communication (DTC) lab training engrosses the shop resources for a few weeks each academic quarter, there will be shop training blackout dates when training for non-DTC students will be unavailable. The Ford Rapid Prototyping Lab hosts an array of cutting-edge, additive manufacturing technology tools, including an Objet Connex Polyjet and Fortus FDM machines from Stratasys, as well as Color 3D Printing equipment from 3D systems. These tools enable students to create complex models quickly and using a wide range of materials.

Mr. Mays already had a legacy because he can take much of the credit for VW's New Beetle, which is set to be one of the most talked about production car designs in many years. Although some would call it a retro car - a statement with which Mr. Mays vehemently disagrees - it has certainly put him on the map. And it also has put California on the map as an important global design center. Ford was expanding in California, opening a new plant at Rosemead and Washington Boulevards in a suburb called Pico-Rivera for Lincoln and Mercury production. The Richmond plant closed on February 25, 1955, and the new San Jose plant produced its first car on March 1, 1955. The company predicted a continued high in auto sales for the next ten years and noted that the 2-car family was on the horizon.

Mr. Matano says this has helped speed up the whole process in developing a new car. Apart from the weather, another strong influence that helps the California design studios is the proximity of the entertainment industry. "The weather and different scenery nearby provides recreational pursuits all year round. The beach, the snow, they all provide inspiration," Mr. Matano says. But it's only in California where there are U.S., Japanese, European and Korean design studios all within 120 miles of each other. With more than 15 design studios in one area it probably beats any place else in the world in sheer numbers. This solution matches the scale of the neighboring buildings by keeping the height low, divides the massing into distinct volumes and details the transparent glass curtain wall to achieve a rich, vertical rhythm.

In addition, it includes state-of-the-art equipment, clean rooms, a robotics laboratory, multiple computer labs for student use, the Tech Express cafeteria, and the Jerome B. Cohen Commons faculty and staff dining room. The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center (2005) is a 63,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility with classrooms, shops, design studios, meeting areas, and team-centered work rooms. Meanwhile, Ford Division had brought out a striking new model, the Thunderbird to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette of 1953. It was a winner from the start, but was not produced at Long Beach where they continued to turn out Fords in the high volume field such as the Mainliner and Skyliner. Upgrading of equipment at changeover marked the news of 1954 as the plant was readied for the new 1955 model. Downtime was an ideal time to do some necessary repair work on the outside of the Plant.

Mr. Sims doesn't see it as much a styling approach as almost an architectural approach, giving "more strength to the sheet metal." These students become highly sought-after employees in many industries because of their ability to execute their designs. You can find them achieving excellence on the various vehicle teams and training other students in the lab. We are always looking for the next generation of Lab Leaders to fill shoes of the graduating class. Over the years the Prototyping and Fabrication Lab has provided an opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to gain invaluable practical design and equipment experience to complement their traditional classroom education.

New Hive, design studios foster collaboration and innovation

Student models and experiments are assembled and displayed in this shop, which can be viewed from the street and the atrium’s first floor. The shop’s prominent location reflects the importance of the creative process and the collaborative spirit of the work being done within the building. The building is detailed to be a teaching tool that subtly exposes the building’s structure and mechanical systems. Registered for LEED Silver certification, the building has a green roof, an under floor displacement air system and a sun tracking device that controls automatic sunshades and lighting levels. A monitoring panel in the entrance lobby allows students to view the building’s systems and energy consumption.

Snøhetta has shared details and updated renderings of a new innovation hub that will anchor the Ford Motor Company’s over 700-acre Research & Engineering (R&E) campus in Dearborn, Michigan. The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center is a 6- story structure located on the South end of Tech Drive, directly east of Sheridan Road.

The year 1952 passed uneventfully with the usual Family Day to view the new model and a brief shutdown due to a steel strike in the east. In June 1953 it was announced that Ford would build a new plant 40 miles southeast of San Francisco near San Jose. The Richmond plant would close and all of its employees would transfer to the new plant.

"Mercedes designers in Stuttgart could not have designed the M-class," says Mr. Matano. In addition to Mr. Mays, American Chris Bangle heads BMW's design staff in Europe. Please note that is strictly intended for Segal Design Institute-affiliated access requests only. We augment the analytical core of engineering with design, entrepreneurship, leadership, personal development, and unusual collaborations to imagine what's next and take the world in a whole new direction. Graduate students seeking to work in the lab should contact the lab professionals for a skills assessment and training plan that will support their intended project work.
